For my birthday this weekend, my boyfriend took me to a surprise destination. We left on Saturday morning and ended up at Max Patch, NC. We hiked to the top and it was amazing. Then he whipped out his ipod and gave me one of the headphones. We slow danced to Band of Horses’ “No One’s Gonna Love You.” I was so moved that I cried. Looking at the beautiful mountains surrounding us—one of which has a monk’s temple on it, and having him holding me listening to that song was something I will never forget.
Then we went to Hot Springs, NC and stayed in the Iron Horse Station. It is a lovely hotel with an amazing bar/restaurant in the oldest building in town. It is right across from the hot springs which we took a late night dip in.
We were laying in the hotel bed at about 8 pm when we heard a series of loud booms. We went downstairs to investigate and discovered that a Civil War reenactment was going on across the street and for some reason they were firing cannons…at night…in the dark. Of course we had to walk over and investigate. We were walking in the direction of the cannon fire when we saw a group of men huddled in the dark. Before we realized it a cannon was going off no less than 50 ft away from us. It was eerie seeing men in Civil War uniforms running around in the dark without flashlights.
Today we had breakfast at the Smoky Mountain Diner and it was so MUCH food for so little $ and sooooo tasty! Then at 2 pm we watched the reenactment and it was powerful and LOUD. Men and women in uniforms were galloping around on horses, firing loud guns and cannons, and dropping “dead.”
It was an epic weekend with my love and it was one of the best, most thoughtful bday presents I have ever received.
